A dog's nose is their primary way of understanding the world. Letting them use it is one of the cheapest, fastest ways to satisfy a restless dog.
Five games to try tonight
None of these need special equipment. Start easy, make it obvious, and let your dog win early so they stay in the game.
- Muffin tin puzzle: hide treats under tennis balls in a muffin tin.
- Towel roll: sprinkle kibble on a towel, roll it up, let your dog unroll it.
- Find it: toss a treat into grass and cue "find it."
- Box search: place a treat in one of several open cardboard boxes.
- Scent trail: drag a smelly treat along the floor and hide it at the end.
How much is enough
Ten to fifteen minutes of nose work is plenty for most dogs, and it pairs well with a shorter walk on busy days. Watch for a dog who settles afterward — that's the sign it worked.
